It Was Easier

easier

Came across this when I was going through the big box of cartoons that have set untouched for over a decade. I can pretty much guess what life was made of when I drew this one…

…sleepless nights, walking the halls with Fussy Babies Who Would Not Sleep, an eternity of diapers, and no way to conjure anything that even slightly resembled a light at the end of the tunnel.

None of us got the license plate of the truck that hit us. We had no category for how the whole planet just tilted on its axis. All we knew is that Life had plans. Big plans. Plans bigger and wilder and more thrilling—and more frightening, than any of us dared think we could script.

Writing this, I now remember, half-smiling, that I drew it to try and convey the odd collision of feeling love to a depth I never dreamed I had the capacity for…and outright revulsion at what I was certain had just downloaded into that kid’s diaper.

What a mix.

Now it’s a teenager and two others with personalities, plans, ideas, and attitudes all their own. Much harder than what I thought I knew when I drew that cartoon.
