Family Clown Car

January 10, 2010

I will never learn.

You know the circus clown cars out which emerge all manner of colorful, whacky, happy little clowns in numbers far exceeding the vehicle’s apparent capacity? Right. Okay, that’s Beta Male.

On the way home from the bookstore I thought I’d fill the quiet with a question that occurred to me when we passed a couple walking their dog.

“Hey, if you were going to get a puppy, what kind would you get?”

And inside my head all I’m in thinking is Benign Yet Happy Little Question, right?

“A black lab.”

“Hm. Okay. Cool.”

Then, as if to show the obvious anemic creativity of my question, he comes back with this:

“Dad, if you were going to own an empire of any food product, what would it be?”

Picture, here, the Beloved SUV swerving down the road because I’m laughing so hard I can’t hold onto the steering wheel or the hot chocolate we just snagged along with our books.  And when I managed to compose myself, he finds purchase in the break in my hysteria and says,

“…I’d go for salad dressing.”

He’s a little clown car, I’m telling you.

Frappé, he’d like you too. That is, if you’re okay being pepper-sprayed with the most bizarre questions imaginable.

John, I am praying now for the girl he’ll one day marry. Because you just KNOW something like this is going to fall out of his mouth someday, and convince the young lady she’s met her soul-mate. *shudders

POh, I do. You can’t picture how queer questions come from a resident’s mouth, so maybe I’ll be prepared for some of Beta’s… Though I just love to be surprised by smart kids like yours.

lol thank you. And yeah, he’s smart. Or very dangerous. We just don’t know which one will pan out. Personally, I’m pulling for “Most Likely To Use His Legos To Solve Cancer.”
