Oh, thank you! I would love that! I'm working on a slide show of Ole Time Ole Brook and want to include whatever iconic items I can find and that old wrecker was certainly one of them. JE's father's old green Jeep was another one. Since I live in New York, I'm having to rely on the web and Google. It's turned into a real labor of love.

Thank you, Todd!

I'll be sure and mention the name to JE. I'll bet she remembers him; she seems to remember everyone from Brookhaven.

And, yes, I believe that's the company's wrecker. I've other photographs where you can see the name painted on the side and would be happy to pass them along.

Sam Carruth. Jane Elizabeth is probably a bit too young to remember him. He passed away in 1998, age 83.

One more thing -- that old truck -- do you happen to know if it was once the company's wrecker?

I stumbled on this Googling for pictures of Kees Motor Company back in the day. I grew up in Brookhaven and spent a lot of fun times as a Girl Scout at that farm. My father worked for Kees Motor Company for skatey-eight years. Thank you posting these wonderful photos, they brought back fond memories.

They wouldn't be able to make a film of what goes on in your head. The pace would be too quick. No-one (except maybe Steven Herman) would be able to keep track. Thank you for sharing snippets with us.

I love that I am not the only Explorer of the Universe (actually it's a Multiverse but who is going to get technical here?). I really wish I could be part of your interesting conversations. So much to glean from others. There were so many beautiful images in this, my favourite... "in a grove of Aspens with the wind blowing to clap their leaves like a thousand little hands" I was standing right there hearing the applause.

It's a great gift and great honor to have met people like you through this vast universe of Internet. The way yo see the world is just as vast and concise as a laser and, in many ways, just as powerful. The energy you have is so intense that I can feel it, sense it around me and lead me to wonder how would it be if I could speak to each of you or both of you some day. For sure I'd remained speechless, in silence, just looking shyly to you and listening to you and learning from you. You're so committed people and I learn too much from you, your words, your talent and the very rare wisdom of your words. Both of you, Todd and Kendall, which I enjoy through Twitter and through Kendall's publications. His photographs, his stories, the different paths that runs his mind (and his body, in his running sessions) lead my own to more deeper states, sometimes I never expected, but a very thoughtful and profound ones.
And Todd, as I grown up to know you, to admire you and to read you, you're a man that inspires other people in many ways, as well as Kendall, and you're capable to ring my bell in some many ways that I'm still amazed you became part of my out-of-Spain life and I'm grateful for that.
Still I feel stick-tongued with you, guys. You amazed me and make things very difficult to me in your English... But I love it.
Thank you for all.

I agree on so many levels it's actually hurting my teeth!! I came very close to buying that leather book cover for my Iphone, but didn't want people to think I talking to a Gideon's Bible I'd stolen from the last cheap motel I stayed at.

Period. And yes, Maybe Star Wars and Battlestar Gallactica have something to do with it. But I still like them. Period.

There are hard times in life... Heartbreaking times, Soul-searching times and, at the end, just Living-times.
I'll give to you an accent bottle of (red) Ribera del Duero's and one of (white) Albariño's wines.
Make some room and lit the fireplace.

All my heart to you, my friend.

Frappé...you extend kindnesses I do not deserve. But I'll never rob you of the flourish in your language or the expansive wealth in your heart.

You are amazing, my friend. Amazing.

(I just now played the YouTube link. You are my new hero.)

Yea! I am celebrating real. You.
The cyber you put between yourself and the world (deviously disguised as a way to connect with the world)only serves to hide the real. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. Todd's backing it up...get outta the way.
I miss your face. And your voice. I don't which one more. OK...both.

I've missed you. Missed the way you shake our consciousness, you make us laugh and meditate at the same time.

I admire your work as an artist not only by itself but because what it represents, because of the immense feelings it rings inside me. And all that is possible because of you, your passion, your open heart about your fears, your insecurities, your almost no modesty (what an artist is for, anyway?) and your proud.

Sharing all those emotions, this way of living made me proud and open minded about faces of Art, Family, Faith, Passion, Compromise and Self-esteem and Perfection that i knew nothing about. And I'm thankful for it and I'm comprehensive and I face myself in all your tribulations, though I'm far, far away from you and your achievements.

To write is a necessity and a relief, a searching into the deep and a finding of dark secrets, obscure emotions and, as the same time, the most brilliant part of ourselves, hiding into the mud of our true very own self.

I face fear every day. Sometimes I'm just freeze of fear. Fear of what? You have written here the key. Maybe fear to be the greatest man I could be, the only one God made in me and that is waiting to be found at last. You have shown the way to reach and to be that kind of man, though as a man with acceptable weakness and wonderful twisted thoughts, feelings, emotions and matters.

You have shown me more than once that be a complete man could be possible. That living without fear is a liberation but as a fact and, as well, is an engaged with Life and Beauty and Goodness. No matter sex orientation, race, height, weight, bodybuilding types, fatty types, skinny types, egomaniacal crisis or just be as an ordinary man as life makes us to be. Greatness is every where and in every thing we do each day.

We don't need to be an artist to be a true artist of our life. With you in Life that can be possible, and every one of us feel it inside, known inside and embrace it inside thanks, in many ways, to you too.

Thank you for come back, you Todd and all your Toddness. You make the world nice to be on it. And that's a miracle only a true spirit can share.

Thanks for writing. I love facebook, I do. I love keeping up with my kids, scoping out their friends (a fb page tells you SO much about a person), scrolling thru pictures and status' and laughing out loud at what my friends say and do. I love giving a glimpse of what I'm up today. But I, too, feel it lets me skim along the surface, avoiding the deeper thoughts and the urge to contemplate and write deeply. Live deeply. You've given me food for thought. And don't worry about Jeff, I'm only an arms length away from being able to give him a good smack.

Thanks for sharing such a special experience Todd. I love the check Yes or No.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who has a special collection of items you just can't get rid of. One of my favorites is the letter Mikayla left on the porch addressed to the fairies. Knowing a good breeze would deliver it to their far away land.

Sarah, it would set you free and make your eyes roll to the back of your head...while you sang opera. It's the 'Bamboo' pad and pen (technically called a 'stylus') and it affords you the most natural fine-grain control over all your creative work, including your benign computer functions. The first few hours will seem strange...but then you'll wonder how you ever did it any other way. :)

You've got me. You really do. That's why you're so inspiring to me. A crazy role model, I might add, but a true one. I just need that inspire force near me. But sometimes it seems to lost in the mist.
Thank you, Todd.

Of course the veteran blog is awesome, but this hit home way more.

As part of a couple astonished to see how conventional (perhaps even outdated) our roles have become, those thoughts of inadequacy are equally, or, perhaps because it is what was traditionally expected, more strongly felt.

I followed such a gentlemen into a parking lot just the other day. I wasnt going there, I was just driving down the road. But I noticed him and the purple heart on his plates and that his hair was white with both hands on the wheel and well under the speed limit. I waited patiently for him to park and turn off his car. He saw a 6'2", 215# stranger in a suit and tie holding his door, he was a bit worried. But when I told him I just wanted to shake his hand and thank him for his service, he cried. It only took a minute of my time, and didnt make me late, but it was thee best part of my week.

It isnt every enough TC. And yes my shirt is tucked in. Thank you for the post and for stepping in the gap on behalf of all the Rolands to your children.

Our area in now awash in color, and I forgot that simple fact about leaves.
Thanks for the reminder.

Mike, it's one of my favorites: Devil's Head, near Salida, Colorado. It's a moderate-level 1.5 mile hike with easy switch-backs. The beginning section (in the photographs) is the part I like best...looks and feels like very old-growth forest right out of Lord Of The Rings.

Hey Todd!

I'm one of the friends God gave Jeff. He told me to check you out. I told him I'm not ready to move on to guys yet. So then he suggested I check out your blog. Oh, ok! Good stuff. I love the interview format of this particular blog. (I might borrow that idea sometime...or outright steal it. Whatever God leads me to do) Looking forward to more!

Juan...you have fairly ruined my budget for book-buying. I can not wait to get all of these books! And I actually read Dinesen's Out Of Africa way back in 1987 — one of my favorites (there's a line in a toast I still recall). Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to this post, Juan. Really brightened my day!

Once upon a time I used to devour books. I was so thirsty of stories, os essays, of theater and poetry that I live in awe almost anytime. But now I'm kinda slowing down a bit. I'm in a strange mood, and in my life changes are so strong and so continuos that I feel a little distracted and, worst, a bit lost. But books are always friends, and with friends come comfort and enlightenment, and with them, though thoughts and meditation, life becomes worthy and understandable.

(Note: Are you reading Carlos Ruiz Zafón's?... Interesting.)

1. The Rest Is Illusion author Eric Arvin. This young struggling author wrote a wonderful coming of age story about love, fear, self-acceptance and death that it's pure poetry and filled with well written characters.
2. Seventy Times Seven, auhtor Salvatore Sapienza explores the inner spirit of a young catholic priest in his battle to combine and to accept his own true nature with his love for God. Beyond religions, is a book about love and self-acceptance.
3. The New Earth author Eckhart Tolle. What a brilliant philosophical book. The author combines so gracefully different sources of Faith and combines and shows how to us, human beings, are capable to develop and to trascend beyond our own necessities and inner battles in search of true freedom in the dawn of the new earth. Nothing new, but fascinating.
4. Rosas Blancas para Wolf by Carlos Hugo Asperilla, because, in the mist of WW-II, on the German side, we can comprehend but never accept how that inferno could happened and how no one could escape from the hell in a never kind but actually comprehensive and touching prose. What a though and a brilliant story.
5. Manyôshu. Because Japanese poetry (when we, Occidentals, were lost in the mist of the Dark Ages, they flourished with a deep, touching and extremely simple poetry... Tannkas and, long time after, haikais are the best way to understand a distant but wonderful civilization that, today, just live about remembrances.

Books that moved me so profoundly... Oh, Todd, the list would be too long...

1. Memoirs of Hadrian of Marguerite Yourcenar. What a brilliant, deep, heartouch and wise novel. This is Literature, with capital letters. One of the most brilliant pen of our times.
2. Alexis of Marguerite Yourcenar. A short-tale, too deep and so touch. And it was written with just 24 years old...
3. Paula of Isabel Allende. You, as a parent, must read this beautiful book about live, hopes, illness and lost.
4. Love in the Times of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. Just love, magic realism and passion.
5. Doña Bárbara and La Trepadora by Rómulo Gallegos. What a passionate books and they can discover you life in the Sabana (the southern-american version of cowboys) and the culture, the legends and the songs of those tough and supersticious people.
6. The Persian Boy by Mary Renault. Never Alexander the Great was so much correct painted and with so much love and understanding.
7. Twenty Poems of Love and A Song Of Despair... Because Love is more than words in Pablo Neruda's hands.
8. The Horse of Troy Project Number 1 by J.J. Benítez (just forget the other 7)... what a story! One of the most humanly and lovely portrayed of Jesus I ever read (and I did it a lot.)
9. Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen. Far beyond the film.
10. The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After by Alexander Dumas... That's a story... Pages flow and story goes and still be fascinating.
11. Theater of Spain's G<olden Century... Never forget it.
12. Saint John of the Cross Poetry or how about love and faith is far away from rules and churches.

And I must stop here.
Thanks, Todd.

I’ll promise I’ll cook the recipe, but I can’t promise take so great pictures of it…
Though, I’m still thinking a good Caprese salad would be nice too…
